How to Get to Heaven

How to become a Christian and  get to Heaven A man once said “Everyone wants to go to Heaven but no-one wants to die.”    An old man in Sydney, Australia used to challenge people on the street with the following question “If you died tonight would you go to Heaven?”   What would your answer be if you were asked that question? Many people say, “well I never did anything really wrong” or “I have been good and nice to people” or they have some good reason to explain their understanding of the credentials required to get to heaven. If we are to understand Heaven as a place of reward after we depart from planet earth, then we need to understand what is truly required to get there.  In all the predominant religions a desire to get to Heaven after death is a major reason for following that religion.   In the Christian faith the teaching is not about attaining to a level or position of religious achievement, but simply to believe God’s Holy Word and through believing, act on its directions and instructions. God’s Word says “for by grace are you saved through faith and not of yourself, it is a gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast.” That is written in Ephesians chapter 2, verse 8. In John’s Gospel chapter 14 and verse 6, Jesus proclaims Himself to be the way, the truth and the life and states that no-one can come to the Father but through Him.Can I explain that in a simple way? If I was to visit the President or King of any country I would have to go through diplomatic channels.  Heaven’s diplomatic channel is Jesus Christ. The bible says that there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 2:5) If I am to go to Heaven, then the diplomatic channels have to be agreed beforehand. I must be in relationship with Jesus Christ. Not only that, but there is some baggage I may be carrying that cannot come with me.   This baggage is called sin. Sin is not the things we do wrong in life, but the nature we are born with. It is inherited like a corrupt gene. It is guaranteed to make us desire to rebel against God’s plan for our lives and it compels us to go our own way and fulfil our own selfish desires. We can even be doing well, but our good deeds will not qualify us to enter Heaven The sins we commit are a product of our sinful nature. They can be listed as anger, jealousy, greed, immorality, selfishness, lying, murder, and so on.  God hates sin and the penalty for sin is death. (Romans 6:23) This death is eternal separation from God and will reap the wrath of God’s judgementGod made a way for mankind to be reconciled to Him. He placed the penalty for our sin upon His Son Jesus Christ. Over 2000 years ago Jesus paid that penalty by dying the most cruel of deaths, crucified on a cross outside the city of Jerusalem. The only person ever born without a sinful nature, died a sinners death for each and every one of us. Not only did He die for us, but the bible teaches us, that three days later, death was overcome by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit and that Jesus arose from the grave conquering death for every believer, forever.  Now that is an amazing story. It is in the realm of the supernatural and that’s exactly what it is. It is God working supernaturally to enable us to have a change of nature from sinful and condemned to clean and acceptable. It is written in 2 Peter 1:4 that we can have a divine nature.  The question is; are we prepared to give up our old nature and reckon it as dead? That takes faith.  Faith to simply believe what God has said in His Word - and for millions all over the world, that is exactly what they did and they have received a new life. A change of nature comes through our repentance, faith and God’s grace.  Repent simply means turning from our old nature and asking forgiveness for the sin and the effects of sin which have characterised and moulded our lives. From then we go on to ask Jesus to save us from sins effects and consequences and to come into our lives and be not only our Saviour, but also our Lord. Whenever Jesus becomes our Lord as well as our Saviour, a new power comes into our lives. This power is given to us by the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit will lead us in a new direction enabling us, by empowering us, to follow God’s ways.  You and I know that there are different ways to live. The best way is God’s way. This new way promises joy and peace. It also promises eternal life and the reward of Heaven for those who believe that what God says is truth and they act upon it, by faith. Should you desire to get a new life then it can begin today. The bible calls this new life “born again.”  All your sins will be forgiven and before God the slate of sin, guilt and condemnation will all be swept clean. It will be as if you never sinned. It’s a new start, a new life with a new friend in Jesus.  This new life promises us what no-one else can. It promises us a place in Heaven. Jesus said to those who believed, that He was going to prepare a place for them. He said “there are many mansions in my Father’s House, if it were not so I would have told you”.    Could you benefit from putting your troubles, your worries, your sin and your cares behind you? Could you be blessed entering into a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and serving the true and living God? You can - and it can start today. It can start even now.  The bible says that today is the day of salvation. A preacher once said that Jesus was only a prayer away. This is an example of a prayer that could change your life Dear Lord Jesus, I am a sinner and I need your help. I believe that you died for sinners and therefore you must have died for me. Today I ask you to forgive me my sin and clean me from all of sins effects. Come into my heart Lord Jesus and be my Saviour and my Lord. If you pray something like the above prayer sincerely and from a repentant heart then Jesus will do exactly as he promised. He said “Come onto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” We are also told to cast all our cares upon Him for He cares for us. Jesus also said “ I am the way the truth and the life, no-one comes to the father except through me” That statement is either true or false. Christians believe it to be the truth. Should you have genuinely prayed a prayer like the above, it is important to tell someone. It would be essential for you to attend a church where they believe the bible as the true and living Word of God. The bible says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God
